According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 22.8 million Americans need help for drug or alcohol abuse. Of those people only a small percent completed rehab successfully. Students took the same survey and of those students, 2.3 million ages 12-17 reported they needed help for drugs or alcohol. Only 8.2% actually got help from a rehab center. Whatever your choice of addiction is, they have one thing in common, low self esteem.

According to Selfesteeminternational.org, recovering addicts and alcoholics indicate that low self esteem is the biggest problem in their lives. They feel alcohol is only a symptom to the alcoholic’s real disease, alcohol or drugs act as a mask. Low self esteem causes and contributes to anxiety, neurosis, defensiveness and ultimately drug and alcohol abuse

Selfesteeminternational.org surveyed some 18 year olds who reported using drugs or alcohol heavily. They reported using when they were as young as seven. They indicated feeling alienated by their families, not good enough, anxious, unhappy and overly impulsive. 66% of high school seniors surveyed reported using drugs or alcohol heavily in order to fit in and fill a personal void.

Sometimes the pain of low self esteem is so difficult to deal with that people turn to destructive behaviors such as drugs and alcohol. They self medicate in hopes that the pain will go away. Addicts use their addictions to help them work through to pain of self hate, or so they think. By drinking or using drugs a vicious cycle of more self hatred starts and before you know it, your life is completely out of control. One drink turns into two, two turns in to three and before you know it your life is all about drinking. You family doesn’t want you around, you have spent all your money and lost your job. Your actions only lead to more self hate and disappointment in yourself.

People have low self esteem for many reasons. However, low self esteem is not caused from one isolated incident but by repetitive criticism over many years. The criticism can come from anyone, a parent, a sibling, teacher or society in general. It is difficult to estimate how many people are experiencing low self esteem, but it is safe to say many people suffer from at least one of the symptoms. Maybe you are happy to see someone fail, overly aggressive, do not recognize your own good qualities, or try to please others because you do not know how to say no.

One of the most important factors in recovery is acceptance of the disease and being able to identify why you choose to be an addict in the first place. Often it is difficult to address years of low self esteem in a twelve week program. That is why follow up counseling and treatment is recommended. One new treatment that is being recommended is hypnosis. Hypnosis works with the subconscious mind to identify painful memories causing the low self esteem and help the patient work through the memory and develop new self confidence. Hypnosis is done in a safe environment and is chemical free which appeals to many recovering addicts.

Some people feel therapy and counseling is the best and only treatment needed to help recovering addicts. Unfortunately, if this were true all rehab facilities would offer a 100% cure rate. Most can not even offer a 70% cure rate. It is important to have a treatment plan that will help to identify why you started abusing drugs or alcohol in the first place, and this is difficult to do with a counselor. Often addicts have little trust in anyone let alone counselors and are more censored when talking until they get to know the counselor. Since hypnosis works with the subconscious mind, it allows the addict to think and speak openly about low self esteem issues.

Drug and alcohol abuse is a very serious problem, but what is more concerning is the underlying behavior of self hate. Until that issue is dealt with, the thought of alcohol and drug abuse is always there for the addict. There are many ways to help improve self esteem but why not do it in a safe environment and start dealing with the real problem today.

If you are looking for a ‘crutch’ to lean on while you go through the motions of quitting you are in luck. Stop smoking aids are available by the aisle full. You can just abut walk into any major store or pharmacy and find the latest quit aid.

With so many different solutions and so many promises about how quickly you will get results, it’s small wonder that people have difficulty choosing just one. So which quit smoking aid do you choose? Which are the best ones?

One could argue that all you need to do is pick one type of aid, try it and if it doesn’t work then move on to the next one. I guess if it was that easy and feasible to do so more people would stop.

You see there isn’t exactly the perfect stop smoking aid. They all have their pros and cons depending on what you require to help you kick the habit. Following is a little bit of information on the most popular and effective to help get you started.

1. Nicotine Stop Smoking Gum

Nicotine gum is a chewing gum that delivers nicotine into the bloodstream with the intention of aiding in gradual smoking cessation. Each piece of gum typically contains 2 or 4 mg of nicotine, roughly equivalent to 1 or 2 cigarettes. Your dosage would depend on your smoking habits.

2. Nicotine Lozenges

The nicotine lozenge is much the same as the nicotine stop smoking gum and is also available in the two strengths, either 2mg or 4mg. They are available in a variety of flavors and in the same way you would suck on a lozenge to relieve a sore throat you would suck on the nicotine lozenge to release nicotine into your bloodstream.

3. The Patch

The nicotine patch is placed on your skin and comes in 21 mg, 14mg or 7 mg. Most patches are worn for 16 or 24 hours and are replaced with a new one on a different area of skin. Nicotine is absorbed through the skin while the patch is on and your dosage will depend on how many cigarettes you smoke a day.

Smokeless tobacco users can also use any one of these stop smoking aids but may prefer the chewing gum as it is much the same as chewing tobacco. This however is not a hard and fast rule. You can choose whichever suits you best.

Don’t feel despondent if one aid does not work. Whichever aid you choose, if it doesn’t help then it is okay to try another method. Many smokers trying to quit use numerous aids that work best in certain situations.

Surgery, whether elective or required is something many will face at some point in their lives. Surgery is complicated and can have many side effects. Often the consent forms are numerous pages listing everything which could go wrong. Surgery is complicated enough without the added risks of smoking.

Certain protocols are in place to help insure the patient’s safety during surgery. Some of the more common protocols are no food or water twelve hours before and take a shower to minimize the risk of infection. For smokers there is another requirement, no smoking at least two weeks before and two weeks after. Some surgeons may even ask the patient for as long as four weeks before and after the surgery.

According to Anesthesiologyinfo.com, smoking does two things to the cardiovascular system which causes many problems for the anesthesiologist and surgeon. By smoking the patient is increasing the carbon monoxide which attaches to the hemoglobin in the blood which will decrease oxygen in the blood. Nicotine will increase the amount of oxygen the body needs putting a stress on the heart and body. The heart will not function properly because of the increased carbon monoxide and blood will not get where it needs to.

Second, the lungs are more likely to collapse because smoke causes the small airways in the lungs to not function properly as well. Smoking makes more mucus which can leak into the lungs, making the lungs unable to clear it. Smokers are more prone to bronchospasms and lung infections which can be fatal. Smoking has been linked to dozens of side effects from heart attacks to poor wound healing in surgery patients, by as many as six times more.

Doctors want their patients to lead a healthier life and have a successful surgery, so generally surgeons and physicians ask their patients to quit for two weeks before and two weeks after surgery. Many surgeons have asked for as many as four weeks before and after to insure their patients are fit for surgery. However, ideally physicians and surgeons want their patients to make smoking secession a top priority.

Quitting has become much easier over the years, mostly because of the availability of treatments. Some of the more common are over the counter, such as the nicotine patch and gum. Others choose to try homeopathic treatments such as herbal remedies, acupuncture and hypnosis. Prescription drugs such as Zyban and Wellbutrin have gained popularity as well. Often treatments are combined so the patient can be as successful as possible.

The most important thing is to discuss with your physician to discuss your options and find out which plan will suit you best. There are many choices and options available to help you quit, the time is now. Do not wait until you need major surgery before trying to quit, quit before you get there.

There are a variety of hypnosis tools which are used in the process of the induction of hypnosis, and although the rocking watch may be what comes to your mind, this is actually not what is meant by the term ‘hypnosis tools’. Rather, this term refers to the different ways in which hypnosis is actually used, as hypnosis in itself is a tool which can be used for incredibly positive reasons, such as for ceasing a negative habit from a person’s life, such as smoking, drinking, or overeating, for example.

More About Hypnosis Tools

The benefits of hypnosis has long been recognized and highly regarded in eliminating unwanted habits and behaviors. Hypnosis suggestion has been directed towards behavior, emotions, sensations, physiologic processes, cognition, imagery, and relationships. And in year 1958, the American Medical Association officially accepted hypnosis as a form of medical treatment.

The use of hypnosis tools as a form of treatment dates back to as far as ancient Egypt. The Ebers Papers, one of the oldest human writings ever found, describes the use of hypnosis as an effective form of medical treatment.

Misunderstandings About Hypnosis Tools

Over the years the various different hypnosis tools have gained a lot of negativity, as certain myths and falsities have been made about them. The media is the first to blame, as most of the misconceptions that have been put on the different hypnosis tools have been impressed on us by books, movies, cartoons, and television programs. However it needs to be known that nothing is farther from the truth when it comes to these myths, and that hypnosis is a natural state of consciousness that we have all been in before anyway.

Hypnosis as a form of mind control is nothing but a myth. A person who is under the induction of hypnosis is completely aware of his or her surroundings and is more receptive to acceptable suggestions.

Hypnosis tools can be a great form of alternate therapy if you allow it to and cast aside negative controversy surrounding it. It can do a lot of good things if you open your mind to it.

Having been a smoker for over forty years I know that trying to give up smoking will not be easy. I have tried in the past and succeeded for a while but then fell back into my old ways again. Quitting smoking is a difficult thing to do so I decided to read up on ways to quit smoking.

The way most people tackle the task of quitting smoking is by simply going cold turkey. They stop smoking and try to remain strong and determined enough to fight the craving and desire for cigarettes. Many people have succeeded in this way and I guess if you are astrong willed person this may work for you. I am not so sure this is the way for me to give up cigarettes as I suspect I would just start all over again.

For some people they need a replacement therapy such as a dummy cigarette. One of the habitual features of smoking is that you have something between your fingers and the idea is that by replacing that cigarette with something else to put between your fingers you can reduce the feeling of loss.

Ashtrays stink. Even smokers know this so one old but simple idea is to smell an ashtray everytime you fancy a cigarette. There are few things as unpleasant as an ashtray and it also reinforces the idea of what cigarettes do to your lungs. Smelling an ashtray may well put you off smoking and doing that each time you want a cigarette could stop you smoking for good.

When you stop smoking suddenly your body craves the nicotine it has become used to. To overcome this problem nicotine patches were developed and you simply fix one to your skin and it will release a certain amount of nicotine into your body. These have become a very effective way for people to quit smoking and have had a lot of success. They can be expensive but the long term savings of not smoking will easily pay for them.

The idea that inserting needles into parts of your body could stop you smoking seems a little odd. However, acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and has had some success in stopping people smoking. My brother stopped smoking for several years after acupuncture so it can work and if you have tried everything else to stop you smoking then you might want to give acupunctue a go.

Willpower is the most powerful way to stop smoking but also the hardest to do. You do need to be very strong willed and determined not to smoke any longer. To help build that strength of determination some people turn to hypnotism and when you think about it this all makes good sense. If you can strengthen your subconscious desire not to smoke then you are building your resolve and strengthening your willpower. Some people claim almost instant results using this method and it may be better than other ways because your sub concious desire is strong that you will not smoke again.
